What is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

National Epilepsy Awareness Month in November is an annual event that teaches people about epilepsy’s causes and symptoms. One in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. Epilepsy is one of the least understood of all the neurological diseases, yet it is the fourth most common. During this month, many organizations join together to provide information about prevention, treatment, research, and resources to fight epilepsy.

History

Epilepsy, unfortunately, has a long history of misunderstanding and stigmatism. Evidence of individuals suffering epilepsy in ancient history attributed it to spiritual or demonic possession. In fact, Hippocrates, the great Roman medical practitioner, shunned the notion that it was a supernatural phenomena and believed that it derived from the brain, had hereditary aspects, and that how it presented itself in childhood also determined how it affected the rest of the individual’s life.

Unfortunately, Hippocrates wasn’t believed until well into the 17th century, when the notion that it wasn’t demonic or spiritual possession finally subsided. But, the stigma associated with it continues to this day. One of the goals of National Epilepsy Awareness Month is to separate the disease from its historical and false reputations. Many countries still believe that it’s a sign of spiritual possession and, until 1980, individuals suffering from epilepsy weren’t allowed to marry in the United States.

History of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month

The invention of peanut butter has long been falsely credited as belonging to George Washington Carver, who was an inventor and also a scientist determined to improve the welfare and nutrition of America’s farmers. This is partly because Mr. Carver was a huge proponent of peanuts as a source of protein and energy, and created a list of foods and recipes for farmers to use that were centered around peanuts.

But Carver did not actually invent peanut butter. By the time he was advocating for peanuts as a supportive, alternative crop (around 1916), peanut butter had already been popularized. In fact, in 1840 a New Yorker named Rose Davis started making peanut butter after her son saw Cuban women grinding the nuts and spreading them on bread. Additionally, evidence has surfaced that Aztecs may have even done something similar as early as the 15th century.

But, the first person credited with creating peanut butter was a French-Canadian man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson, who created it in 1884. Fourteen years later, Kellogg (the man of cereal fame) created the first streamlined process to mass produce the product and it was quickly considered a snack for elite society members as it was served as a protein source in wealthier hospitals. Since then, it’s grown to be more widely available, with PB&J becoming the official sandwich of, well, everyone who wants a quick, affordable, and protein-filled snack.

History of Square Dancing Day

Square Dancing has its roots in traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk dance. Square dances were first documented in 17th-century England. They came to North America right along with the European settlers, where they were modified and improved over the years. The Western American square dance is perhaps the most famous type of square dance worldwide; in fact, the square dance is the official dance of 19 American states.

Square dancing is mainly associated with a romanticized image of the Old West, and cowboys wooing Southern belles during dances organized at saloons to celebrate various occasions. The dance is accompanied by jolly, lively music on guitars, fiddles, accordions and bagpipes.

The dances normally form patterns of lines, circles and, as the name suggests, squares, with couples – male/female, female/female or male/male – taking a turn in every role. In most American forms of square dance, the dancers are prompted through the square dance choreography to the beat of the music.

Maize Day is celebrated every year to mark the special role that maize has played in food history. Maize, which the Europeans came to call “corn,” has an ancient and interesting history and plays central roles in many native myths and legends. History of Maize Day

With the help of their legends, the natives of America could trace the history of maize to the beginning of time. Maize was, they believed, the food of the gods that had created the Earth, and so it played a central role in many native myths and legends. It also came to be one of their most important foods.

In fact, the word maize itself derives from the Spanish form of the indigenous word for plant. In one form or other, maize made up roughly 65 percent of the native diet. In fact, maize was so important to the natives that when Europeans first came to North America in search of gold and asked the natives about whether there was any precious yellow substance to be found there, the natives showed them corn, for to them there was almost nothing more valuable than that grain.

The European settlers had in fact brought their own grains with them, but they soon found that their barley and oats did not fare as well in North America as they had in Europe, and so they began grinding corn kernels to make meal that was later used to make bread. And like the natives, colonial farmers also found that different parts of the plant had a number of useful by-products and purposes. They used cobs to start fires and to fuel slow-burning fires. They used its stalk and leaves for livestock feed.

They used husks to make brooms and chair bottoms as well as to pad mattresses and collars for draft animals. Maize was the first-ever crop to be domesticated by Native Americans and this impressive crop is now used in numerous types of food including chewing gum, bread, corn flakes, and popcorn. Maize is almost universally used as one of the main ingredients of feed for cows and horses. “Feed maize” is being used increasingly for heating; it is burned in special corn stoves.

All in all, maize is thought to have been around since 1500 B.C., and once it was first cultivated it began to spread rapidly. Until this day, it is the staple food in many South American countries and is also enjoyed as a side dish by people all over the world.

Of course, the best way to celebrate Maize Day is by gathering with friends and family to eat a special meal made from different types of maize, in different forms and added to all different types of dishes. The possibilities are almost infinite!

History of Novel Writing Month

Novel Writing Month brings your excuses to a halt by encouraging everyone to take this one month of the year to try their hand at the grand art of storytelling. 50,000 words in one month is the goal, a number that seems quite daunting until you realize that over a span of 30 days it’s just 1700 words a day. To put that into perspective, that’s about three times the length of this article!

Established in 1999, NaNoWriMo was July back then, and the heart of it was the magical city of San Francisco. That year there were only 21 people involved, and they were at the heart of a revolution, though perhaps not the heart of the one they imagined. Fifteen years later thousands of people all over the world are participating in this amazing event, resulting in volumes of creative expression unlike the world has ever seen.

How to celebrate National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo has a thriving and supportive community of people who love getting together, physically and digitally, to support each other and offer encouragement and inspiration to drive the creative endeavor. At homes, restaurants, coffee shops, libraries, and schools all over the world, NaNoWriMo takes all these places by storm. You can pop into nanintoo.org and find yourself a local “write-in” near you to help you get your write on!

Obviously, whether you join these folks or not, the whole point of NaNoWriMo is writing. So dig an idea out of your head and start writing, and hold yourself to 1700 words a day throughout the entire month of November. Don’t worry about editing, rewriting, or any of the little fiddly things one does when finishing a novel, that all can wait until after you’re done. The goal now is to get 50,000 words down on the page by the end of the month!

Don’t let November go by without taking your greatest novel idea and turning it into a reality!

“Qu’ils mangent de la brioche!” or, “Let them eat cake!” Perhaps the most famous quote about cake ever, these were the words of a great French princess, often likely Marie Antoinette herself, upon being informed that the peasants were so poor that they had no bread to eat during one of the famines that occurred in France during the reign of her husband, Louis XVI.

The History of Cake Day

The history of cake dates back to ancient times, and the first cakes are thought to have been made in Ancient Greece and Egypt. These first cakes were rather heavy and flat and were eaten at the end of a meal with nuts and honey.

Nowadays, this type of cake has evolved into baklava, a traditional Greek dessert and a must-try for any fan of sweet stickiness. In later years the ancient Romans also created their own version of this sweet treat, which was rather creamy and rich.

However, like in many cultures around the world, this cake was often reserved for the gods and was offered to them at their temples as a sign of respect, love, and reverence. The Oxford English Dictionary traces the English word cake back to the 13th century. During the Great Depression, it was necessary to provide easy, relatively cheap food to millions of Americans who were living in poverty, and the boxed cake mix was born. The idea turned out to be pure gold, as millions of housewives all over the United States took advantage of this way to make their lives easier.

How to celebrate Cake Day

Of course, the best way to celebrate Cake Day is by eating cake with family and friends. You can buy a number of different types of cakes to celebrate the event, or have fun making your own cakes mark the occasion. There are many different kinds of cake to choose from. Yeast cakes are one of the oldest types and are pretty similar to bread in texture, due to the yeast content.

There are many different types of cheesecake, from the rich and creamy New York style cheesecakes baked in a graham cracker crust and drowned in cherry syrup, to the healthier varieties made from cottage cheese and filled with orange and lemon peel and raisins that are lower in calories and fat and higher in protein.

Sponge cakes rely on the air trapped inside them during baking for their light texture, and are famously paired with rich butter or cream cheese-based icings for balance; however, these icings tend to be a bit complicated to make and are easily ruined, so if you are a novice baker, perhaps go for something a bit simpler.

So pick a type of cake that suits you and you family’s or friends’ needs the best and start baking! The experience will be both fun and educational.

In French, the word parfait means “perfect”, and in American English, the term almost exclusively refers to a sort of delicious, frozen dessert. If your idea of perfection involves ice cream, then you’ll have little trouble understanding the connection with the name. And why not have a day devoted to creamy, delicious indulgence? Shouldn’t there be at least one day of the year where you can indulge in something so rich and celebrate rather than feeling guilty about it?

History of Parfait Day

The parfait itself dates back to 1894, but it would be a huge stretch of the imagination to think that the holiday celebrating these delicious frozen concoctions would go back all the way to their origins. In fact, the origins of Parfait Day are quite obscure, and we suggest that rather than breaking your head over the origins of parfait day, you should just go enjoy a parfait. After all, if we couldn’t dig up the history, you think you would be able to?

Celebrating Parfait Day

The most obvious way to celebrate Parfait Day is by making or eating a parfait. You can host a parfait party (all the more doable with our handy French parfait recipe which follows), get a job in an ice cream shop (if you’re more interested in making and serving parfaits than eating them), or just go out to someplace where they sell parfaits and buy the damn thing so you can indulge without putting in the effort of making it. In fact, the only legitimate ways to celebrate Parfait Day all involve parfaits. Go figure!

How to Make a Traditional French Parfait

In France, a parfait is a frozen dessert made from a base of simple syrup, egg, and cream. Parfaits contain enough alcohol, fat, or sugar that they can be made without the frequent stirring required for ice cream. In other parts of the world such as Canada, the US, and Japan, a parfait is either the traditional French dessert, or another variant (known as an “American parfait”) which combines parfait cream, ice cream, and sometimes flavored gelatins which are served in a clear glass with whipped cream and fresh or canned fruit.

You also get variants on this with chocolate and/or cookies, and it goes without saying that there have been a number of delicious iterations on the cookies n’cream theme. There’s also a variant which combines yogurt with granola and nuts or fresh fruits, which is common in North America. But in Britain, parfait can refer to a very fine meat paste (like the French pâté), which is most often made from liver and then flavored with liqueurs. So apparently the British think that parfaits are something totally different – goes to show that you can’t always assume that names of dishes are the same everywhere.

Anyway, it’d be a shame for you to allow Parfait Day to pass without actually indulging in a parfait, and since you may well be far more familiar with the American parfait over the original French version, let’s shake things up a bit. Yup, that’s right, this here is a recipe for the traditional coffee-flavored French parfait. So try it out to celebrate Parfait Day.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sugar

4 eggs (room temperature)

1 cup whipping cream (must be very cold)

1 teaspoon coffee extract (or just use espresso or even instant coffee)

1 tablespoon vanilla sugar*

4 ounces ground praline**

1. Make a simple syrup by placing the sugar in a saucepan with two tablespoons of water and bringing it to a boil for two minutes.

2. Break the eggs into a mixing bowl and beat them. Pour the simple syrup in a steady, thin stream whilst continuing to beat the mixture. Add the coffee extract, and continue beating until the mixture has cooled and become very thick (this would take about 10 minutes).

3. Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Add the vanilla sugar, then continue whipping until it’s firm.

4. Fold the whipped cream into the whipped egg mixture, and the fold in the ground praline. Just keep folding things until everything is folded.

5. Carefully spoon the mixture into parfait glasses (this recipe should give you enough for six), cover, and freeze for at least four hours before serving.

6. Celebrate Parfait Day by eating parfaits. Call a few friends over, enjoy with your family, or simply hoard them all for yourself. The choice is yours.

*Vanilla sugar is commonly used in French desserts. It’s just vanilla-flavoured sugar, and you can either substitute using vanilla extract or make your own. To do that, split a vanilla bean several times and then put it in an airtight container with four cups of sugar. Keep it in a cool, dark place for several weeks. Congratulations, you now have vanilla-infused sugar.

** Praline is a popular dessert ingredient which contains candied almonds and hazelnuts which are ground finely to make a crunchy powder. You’ll need 3/4 cup hazelnuts, 3/4 cup blanched almonds, 1 cup sugar, and 1/4 cup of water. Bake the nuts for ten minutes or until they’re toasted, then make a caramel by stirring the sugar and water together and boiling until it becomes a light caramel color. Remove the caramel from the heat, stir in the toasted nuts, and then spread the mixture on a cookie sheet to cool. Then, once it’s cooled, break up the pieces and grind them smoothly. You now have ground praline.

The modern day allows Vegans to truly enjoy the broad range of foods the world has to offer, and substitutions for those that involve animal cruelty. A cruelty free world isn’t far away!

As we mentioned above, there are a ton of vegan options in the world, especially festivals and gathers where recipes and food secrets are exchanged. It goes a lot further than just food options too, everything from lipstick to deodorant has been guilty of containing animal products, and there was little on the shelf that wasn’t tested on animals. National Adoption Day is celebrated every November 23. Did you know that last year alone, 4,000 adoptions were finalized on the Saturday before Thanksgiving? Events are held all over the country to celebrate this holiday — during which communities and courts join efforts to find the right families for children in the foster care system. Let’s celebrate National Adoption Day as thousands of foster children are welcomed into their forever homes!

History of National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day is an effort to focus attention on the more than 125,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the U.S. A coalition of national partners — the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network — founded National Adoption Day.

The coalition, along with the Freddie Mac Foundation, encouraged seven cities in 2000 to open their courts on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care.

Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Juvenile Court, inspired the first National Adoption Day with his innovative efforts. Nash opened the court on Saturdays, engaged the volunteer efforts of court personnel, and finalized adoptions to reduce the backlog of one of the busiest courts in the nation.

Today policymakers, practitioners and advocates collaborate to plan these annual, one-day events in 400 U.S. cities. To date the dreams of 75,000 children in foster care have come true as part of National Adoption Day events.

Approximately 2 million Americans are adopted — with about 150,000 adoptions happening each year, including about 50,000 through foster-care. U.S. adoptions may be either domestic or international. Domestic adoptions can be arranged either through a state agency, an adoption agency, or independently.

In Movember, let your beard and mustache grow wild to raise awareness for men’s health issues!

History of Movember

It all got started in 1999 in Australia when a group of young men decided that the middle of summer was a fantastic time to grow a beard (seasons are backward down there, remember). It all started, as most great ideas do, in a local pub and quickly came to contain a group of 80 men dedicated to raising awareness for men’s health issues and spreading this around the world. While it started out just focusing on raising awareness for prostate cancer and depression, it would soon grow to include all men’s health issues.

Competitions for the greatest mustache are held around the world, with 21 national winners being selected, and then one of their number being immortalized as the International Man Of Movember. This movement hasn’t been stopped by much, either, in spite of Scots College in Wellington, New Zealand attempting to suppress it by banning those men who were participating from end-of-the-year prizes from the school.

Today it’s one of the most respected men’s health awareness organizations and has branches and participants all over the world. Everyone from sports teams to educational professionals can be found sporting a mustache during Movember, and on one notable occasion, a Boeing 737-800 that belonged to the Australian National Rugby Union Team!

How to Celebrate Movember

It all starts with throwing out your razor and letting your facial hair grow wild! Man or woman, or something less defined, it makes no difference! In Movember, if you can grow facial hair, it’s time to let grow wild! Style it or leave it untamed, color it or leave it natural, wax it or pomade it, whatever you do just make sure you spend Movember growing a magnificent mustache and beard. There isn’t much you can’t add to stuffing that won’t make it equally amazing, and chunks of apple are a common addition to bring a sweetness both to the stuffing itself and the meat it is cooked in or around.

Stuffing is such an amazing substance that it is frequently enjoyed all on its own, and Stuffing Day encourages you to try a variety of different seasonings to find out which one is your favorite.

How to celebrate Stuffing Day

In our mind, the best way to celebrate stuffing day is to spend the whole day doing new and innovative things with stuffing! While it isn’t something most would think of, there’s nothing better than a turkey sandwich topped with stuffing and cranberry. Of course, you could also stuff pork chops, or mushrooms, or just about anything you can imagine and cook it thoroughly. When preparing stuffing properly there is one thing to be careful of, and that’s to cook the meat thoroughly to ensure that the stuffing is safe to consume as well. Stuffing Day is a wonderful day and one that celebrates the dish itself.

The first known carbonated beverages were alcoholic. During the 1600’s, beer, wine, and champagne were carbonated through the fermentation process. However, as chemists experimented with the idea of putting bubbles into the water, their later inventions, such as Dr. Henry Cavendish’s aerating apparatus, would inspire Joseph Priestley to experiment with carbonated water himself. He later discovered a method of infusing water with bubbles by suspending a bowl of water over a beer vat. He found that the water to be pleasant tasting and offered it to people as a way to refresh themselves.

Since his experiments, entrepreneurs started manufacturing the carbonated water into bottles and created a business out of it, leading to the invention of soft drinks infused with flavors and caffeine. One of the first flavored carbonated soft drinks was ginger beer. As industrialization took over, the invention of resealable bottles helped keep the manufacturing process going. As the caffeinated part, caffeine has been a part of human history because of drinks like tea and coffee. When people started experimenting with carbonated drinks, caffeine was added to bring more allure to potential consumers, which came when the invention of Coca-Cola and Pepsi became popular in the 1950’s and 60’s.

How to celebrate Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day

If you can’t go without your caffeine but don’t like coffee or tea, then take this day to buy a soda and drink it throughout your day. If you’re not a fan, then try out a soda flavored chapstick as a solution and drink a cup of coffee or tea. Or if you want to try something different, try a carbonated yerba mate, guayusa, or carbonated chocolate drink and get your caffeine fix there.
