Mail Order Catalog Day 2021

Mail Order Catalog Day

Losing feels worse than winning feels good.

Vin Scully

Although Benjamin Franklin has a good claim to be the world’s first mail order entrepreneur, it is the anniversary of the first Montogomery Ward catalogue of 1872 that has provided the date for Mail Order Catalog Day. Over the intervening years, it grew from a single page of products to a monster capable of striking fear into the stoutest of postal workers!

Alas, the Montgomery Ward behemoth is no longer with us, having faded away in 1985, but stalwarts such as Sears still carry the torch, whilst the catalogue with the longest run to date, the Hammacher Schlemmer, still plies tools and building materials (no doubt including torches, should Sears ever drop theirs).

Celebrate the day in style by signing up for a few mail order catalogues and ordering some goodies. Running shoes are a great place to start, especially if your postman is not of a forgiving nature.

To celebrate Mail Order Catalog Day, we have special activities and deals!

National Fajita Day History

National Fajita Day

I don't want people to look back at my matches and say, 'When you did that move, it was good, and I liked it because it was cool.' I want people to sort of remember a rush of images and the emotion that they felt when they saw it. That's when I think you have a real masterpiece in your hands.

Kenny Omega

History of National Fajita Day

A true manifesto of what Tex-Mex culture is, the fajita has taken the culinary world by storm but it all started from some very humble beginnings.

The concept of fajitas began to make the rounds in the early 1930s when Mexican vaqueros in Texas developed the fajita from throwaway cuts of beef – part of their payment for their job.  Because of this, said workers learned to use the tough cuts the best they could, especially the flavorsome skirt steak. They cooked the steak over an open fire or grill and were typically served with flour or corn tortillas, pico de gallo, guacamole, and southwestern spices. Soon the cheap, efficient meal meant as a quick fix for workers was becoming a staple in the area, finding its way into new mouths and bellies.

As such, there are numerous different joints that were around at the time that claim to be the launchpad for the fajita. It’s not surprising, everyone wants to be part of a success story. It was in the late 1960s that  Sonny Falcon started selling fajitas. He sold so many that he was eventually christened “The Fajita King” as recognition for his role in introducing fajitas to the general public.

Other big moments in fajita history include the restaurant Ninfa’s creating their own version of fajitas in 1973, and Austin’s La Vista restaurant putting “sizzling fajitas” on the menu in 1982. National Fajita Day  itself was coined by the restaurant chain On the Border to celebrate the show-stopping dish. If all of this hasn’t got you watering at the mouth then we don’t know what will.

Get some steak sizzling over an open flame because August 18 is National Fajita Day. It’s a day to celebrate the authentic taste of the Southwest with the fiesta of flavor known as the fajita. Throw in some awesome black beans or even add a little hot sauce, guacamole, sour cream, or cheese. The combinations are endless. It’s National Fajita Day so you know what you’ve got to do (eat fajitas, obviously).

Celebration Peach Month August 2021

Peach Month

Ronald Reagan, when President of the United States of America, proclaimed August “Peach Month” and called upon the people of the United States to incorporate this nutritious fruit into their diets, and call upon interested groups to celebrate this month with appropriate programs and activities. Filed with the Office of the Federal Register, 11:05 a.m., June 16, 1982.

The peach (Prunus persica) is a species of Prunus native to China that bears an edible juicy fruit also called a peach.

It is a deciduous tree growing to 5–10 m tall, belonging to the subfamily Prunoideae of the family Rosaceae. It is classified with the almond in the subgenus Amygdalus within the genus Prunus, distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated seed shell.

The leaves are lanceolate, 7–15 cm long and 2–3 cm broad. The flowers are produced in early spring before the leaves; they are solitary or paired, 2.5–3 cm diameter, pink, with five petals. The fruit is a drupe, with a single large seed encased in hard wood (called the “stone” or “pit”), yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars. The flesh is very delicate and easily bruised in some cultivars, but is fairly firm in some commercial cultivars, especially when green. The seed is red-brown, oval shaped and 1.5-2 cm long. Peaches, along with cherries, plums, and apricots, are stone fruits (drupes).

Listicles National Eye Exam Month 2021

National Eye Exam Month

I would like to do another piece of fiction dealing with a number of issues: Lesbian parenting, the 1960's, and interracial relationships in the Lesbian and Gay community.

Audre Lorde

5 Eye-catching Facts About Eyes

  1. Millions of us need help

It’s estimated that around 12.2 million Americans need vision correction.

  2. Don't forget about your kids

Somewhere around half of all children under the age of 12 have never had their eyes checked.

  3. The eyes have it

While it takes some time for most parts of your body to warm up to their full potential, your eyes operate at 100% at all times.

  4. Eyes require enormous cerebral power

Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.

  5. Eyes can be fixed

Most vision problems worldwide are avoidable or curable.

This August, observe National Eye Exam Month by learning about ways to keep your vision clear and healthy. As we age, getting a baseline eye exam can detect early signs of disease or damage to your eyes. Ophthalmologists recommend periodic eye exams every 2-4 years from the ages of 40 to 65, and every 1-2 years after the age of 65. While most symptoms are often disregarded, getting a simple checkup and following a doctor’s orders can greatly lower risks of more severe and future damage, and you can continue to enjoy healthy vision.

Happiness Happens Month 2021

Happiness Happens Month

I track some long hours.

Jim Pattison

What makes you happy? Happiness Happens Month is a whole month dedicated to celebrating what makes you happy. The holiday is based on the premise that happiness is unlimited and contagious and that sharing one’s happiness and can bring a lot of joy in other people’s lives.

Even though Happiness Happens Month sounds silly, it does have a very important purpose. “The month reminds us that happiness happens one small moment at a time and it’s our job to recognize those moments when they happen. It reminds us that sometimes a small action boosts our happiness. It reminds us that happiness is a personal experience and it’s also contagious!”

The History of Happiness Happens Month

Pamela Gail Johnson is the Founder of The Secret Society of Happy People (SOHP) and is quoted as saying “I started the Secret Society of Happy People in 1998 to provide a missing voice for those who are happy and want to express it without having other people rain on their parade. (Boo, Hiss!)”.

The Secret Society of Happy People started celebrating happiness with Admit You’re Happy Day on August 8, 1999. But their members wanted to let the happy feeling linger a little longer, so in 2000 they expanded the celebration to the entire month of August. Eventually the month was renamed Happiness Happens Day and Month.

How to Celebrate Happiness Happens Month

Happiness Happens Day encourages people to take stock of their lives and try to do and think about things that make them happy and to share this joy with others. Here are some ways to celebrate this happy day:
Do something nice for yourself – after all, happiness starts at home. Make someone else happy by doing something nice for them. It can be something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus to someone else or a more elaborate gesture like volunteering your time and money to a charity of your choice.

Studies have found that volunteering doesn’t only help people bring joy in their lives but can also help them live longer. Don a pair of silver shades (because happy people always see the silver lining), laugh (laughter is still the best medicine), smile (and the world smiles with you). The Secret Society of Happy People are having a 31 Days ~ 31 Happiness Challenges. Every day there will be a different happy challenge. You are able to participate by following them on the following social media outlets…Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google+

World Lung Cancer Day 2021

World Lung Cancer Day

The truth is many of us have been socialized to think that if we are not the very best, if we are not at the top 1 percent of whatever it is we do, then we are not good enough. To reinforce this already pervasive mental model, society has established a competitive hierarchy for just about everything.

Elizabeth Thornton

Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers worldwide, claiming more lives yearly than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. It is estimated that lung cancer accounts for nearly one in five cancer deaths globally. In 2012, there were 1.8 million newly diagnosed cases of lung cancer alone.

The American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), alongside members of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) commemorates, celebrates and supports those impacted by lung cancer. FIRS joins the grassroots efforts of the lung cancer community to raise awareness about lung cancer and its global impact, creating an educational movement of understanding lung cancer risks as well as early treatment around the world.

The History of World Lung Cancer Day

Lung cancer was a rare disease in early 20th century but its incidence has gradually increased with increased smoking and it has become the most common type of cancer in the world. The lung cancers accounts for 12.8% of cancer cases and 17.8% of mortalities of cancer worldwide. Lung cancer is a preventable disease. The factors that play a role in cancer development include tobacco products, industrial products (uranium, radiation, asbestos) air pollution, and nutritional deficiencies. Recent studies have demonstrated that the critical factor increasing the risk of lung cancer is the long-term respiration of carcinogenic materials.

Epidemiologic case-control studies by 1950s proved that smoking was strongly correlated with lung cancer. The first findings that smoking was a cause of lung cancer were published in 1962. Smoking is responsible for developing lung cancer by 94%. The risk of lung cancer is 24-36 times higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The risk is 3.5% in passive smoking. Age to start smoking, period of smoking, number of cigarettes smoked, and type of tobacco and cigarette have influence on the risk of developing lung cancer.

The IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) is the world’s largest meeting dedicated to lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. More than 7,000 delegates come from more than 100 countries to discuss the latest developments in thoracic malignancy research. Attendees include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, basic research scientists, nurses and allied health professionals and patients.

How to Celebrate World Lung Cancer Day

It is important that IASLC members help communicate the vast threat lung cancer poses around the world. They need the public and the media to understand that new research, diagnosis and treatment breakthroughs in the last 10 years have brought new hope to patients and their families. To help spread the message about lung cancer, the IASLC created a series of fact sheets focusing on different regions around the globe and have translated them into several different languages. You could look up some of these and inform friends and family about the risks and factors contributing to them.

Respect For Parents Day 2021

Respect For Parents Day

You know, it's not the world that was my oppressor, because what the world does to you, if the world does it to you long enough and effectively enough, you begin to do to yourself.

James Baldwin

Respect for Parents Day is also the perfect starting point to teach your children about respect and bring more of it into your home. To appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship

History of Respect for Parents Day

Many believe that the holiday might have originated because of the eternal human desire to honor and appreciate the love and care of parents, whose enormous effort resulted in giving a better human kind to the nation. The parents’ Day celebration officially came to USA in the year 1994 by the sincere efforts of the former US President Bill Clinton.
Many organizations, local government and other communities encourage Parents’ Day by organizing various activities and games.

For example the Parents’ Day Council of the local bodies nominates parents for the “Parents of the Year”. The ideal parents of each state are nominated for the award “National Parents of the Year”. In recent days Parents’ Day proclamations and rallies have been organized by the United Civil Rights Councils of America.

How to celebrate Respect for Parents Day

Here are several ways you can teach your children how to respect you. Take a few minutes and look at your own behavior. Are you respectful to those around you? If your children are constantly yelling and using sharp tones, is that because you do as well? If you want your children to be respectful, you must also demonstrate that type of behavior. You must give them respect and then expect it in return. Your children pick up more from you than you may realize. Watch your behavior, your words, your tone and your actions when you are in their presence.

Although Parents’ Day is a national observance but still it is not a federal holiday in USA. This day is used to honor the love, respect, sacrifice and affection shown by the two very important persons in the life of every individual. Go spend the day with your parents. Show them how much you respect them. Help them around the house and maybe get them a card or small gift to let them know you were thinking of them. You could take them out to a nice dinner and pay for them. Take them to a show. Maybe even take them to the zoo. There are so many creative ways to show them respect.
