Why Do We Celebrate National Ice Cream Month?

National Ice Cream Month

We think when God speaks to us, there's going to be a boom out of Heaven or we're going to get some chill bumps, but I really believe God's talking to us all the time. He's talking to us right in here. I call it our heart, our conscience, but it's the Holy Spirit talking to us.

Joel Osteen

National Ice Cream Month Activities

  1. Host an ice cream party

Next time you're having a barbecue this summer, add an ice cream bar! You can do it potluck style—supply several different flavors of ice cream and ask your friends to bring their favorite toppings. You might not be the life of the party, but your dessert will—and that's what counts.

  2. Try as many ice cream flavors as you can

How many ice cream flavors can you eat this month? We challenge you to try at least 10, but you can set your own goal and see how well you do. We know we'll be aiming for the moon—try and keep up!

  3. Invent your own flavor

To celebrate everyone's favorite month, find a recipe you can use as a starting point to invent your own ice cream flavor. You can use a vanilla ice cream recipe and add your favorite toppings, or just pour ingredients into a pan and wing it. If you have an ice cream maker, this is your time to shine. If you don't, there are plenty of recipes that you can make without any equipment!

Why We Love National Ice Cream Month

  1. It's the perfect excuse to eat ice cream

We're always looking for reasons to eat sweets—and with summer here, what better treat than a frozen one? This holiday gives us the perfect opportunity to eat as much ice cream as our heart desires. And believe us, our heart desires a lot.

  2. It pushes us out of our comfort zone

When we treat ice cream as a rare delicacy, we always order the same flavor. We go with what we know, because we're not sure when we're going to have ice cream again. However, when we have the opportunity to eat it every day, we don't have to play it safe. Cookies and cream begone—we want to try flavors like thai tea and taro.

  3. It's a gateway to other desserts

The most beautiful thing about ice cream is how many delicious desserts it can go on top of. Brownie with chocolate ice cream? Yes please! Pie with a side of vanilla? Pile it on us. This month is a great excuse to eat lots of desserts—as long as they involve ice cream, they're fair game.

This July is National Ice Cream Month, and you have Kentucky to thank! In 1984, Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month and the 15th of that month National Ice Cream Day. Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law the same year, and the rest is history! Even though the bill only specified that July 1984 was National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on—much to our pleasure. Celebrate with us this July!

To celebrate National Ice Cream Month, we have special activities and deals!

Why Do We Celebrate National Gorgeous Grandma Day?

National Gorgeous Grandma Day

We call ourselves a dog's 'master' - but who ever dared to call himself the 'master' of a cat? We own a dog - he is with us as a slave and inferior because we wish him to be. But we entertain a cat - he adorns our hearth as a guest, fellow-lodger, and equal because he wishes to be there.

H. P. Lovecraft

National Gorgeous Grandma Day Activities

  1. Take her shopping

When’s the last time you treated your grandma to a date? Today is the day to pamper her and treat her the way she deserves. Take this time to go shopping with her. Spoil her. Give her a modern day makeover and make her feel like the young fox she once was. (Well, is, really. Did we mention our grandmas are gorgeous yet? Grandma, if you’re reading this, you’re a foxy babe.)

  2. Send her a card

Leave FaceTime, texting, and phone calls behind in the past. Do something out of the ordinary, with more meaning, that will make your gorgeous grandma smile from ear to ear. Purchase a blank card from your local convenience store, and let her know what she means to you. Send her flowers with the card! Just like One Direction would say “[Your grandma] doesn’t know she’s beautiful, oh oh.” It’s your job to remind her. So go get em, tiger!

  3. Join the conversation – #GorgeousGrandma

Let the world know how gorgeous your grandma truly is by posting pictures of you two having a blast. Use the hashtag #GorgeousGrandma to see other Nanas out there. Have fun! But remember—yours is always going to be the hottest. She says so.

Why We Love National Gorgeous Grandma Day

  1. She makes the best. food. ever.

Think about it, who makes the best food in your family? Whose food do you look forward to during the holidays? It’s always Grandma’s, am I right? Now, calm down—this is not an attack on other family members. But we’re just saying, no one in history has ever said, “This Mac’N’Cheese is amazing. Just like Uncle Jim Bob used to make it!” Well, one person out there might have said it, but you know what we mean. Grandmas make the best dishes. Period. Live with it, Uncle Jim Bob. Jim Bob’s probably not as gorgeous as Grandma, either. She takes the cake (see what we did there) for cooking with style and panache. Speaking of which, we’re hungry. Do you think our grandmas would make us some food?

  2. She has (less than) no filter

Most gorgeous grandmothers have the tendency to say whatever comes to mind, no matter who they are around. We aren’t sure what the reason is, but we’ve narrowed it down to two possibilities. They either don’t care, or they don’t know what they are saying is “politically incorrect.” Either way, we’re 100% here for it. It may not fit in with our society’s standards, but it’s entertaining to say the least. Is this a good time to mention how gorgeous our grandmas look while spouting politically incorrect nonsense? No? Well we did it anyway. Our grandmas are beautiful and we don’t care who knows it. Take that, world!

  3. She's a rebel with a cause

Grandmas are badasses set in their ways, and they typically don’t like to listen to rules. Especially rules like, “Do not give Johnny Jr. ice cream, Mom.” Saying that to the average grandma is like telling her not to push a giant red button. Forget about it. Grandmas love to spoil their children regardless of what they are told. And so even though we love our gorgeous grandmas, we suspect our children love them even more. They’re not thinking about things like early onset diabetes—oh no. They’re just reveling in sugar highs all day.

Maybe you call her Nana. Maybe you call her Granny. Maybe you call her when you’re in trouble because you know she’ll be there for you at the drop of a hat. Whatever the case may be, today is her day. But it’s not just Grandma Day—oh no. This July 23, we celebrate National Gorgeous Grandma Day. Today’s the day to tell ol’ Granny just how stunning she really is. She looks fly for an eighty year old, you have to admit. We bet all the grandpas are dying to get with her.

Celebration Sarcoma Awareness Month July 2021

Sarcoma Awareness Month

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

Orange Chicken Day 2021

Orange Chicken Day

I wince at some of the things I did as the young wife of Canada's fifteenth prime minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Margaret Trudeau

Orange chicken is one of our favorite indulgences, a delicious blend of chicken, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil drenched in a delicious orange sauce. We know that it is almost the perfect Asian food, and that’s why we weren’t at all surprised to find it had a holiday of its very own, Orange Chicken Day!

Learn about Orange Chicken Day

Orange Chicken Day has been designed to celebrate the delicious Chinese dish that is now enjoyed all around the world. If you are a fan of Orange Chicken, you have the perfect excuse to indulge on it on this day – not that you need one!

If you have never had Orange Chicken before, you are seriously missing out, and you should definitely use Orange Chicken Day to try this delicious dish. The dish is made with boneless and skinless chicken breast, which is cut into smaller pieces, dredged, and then fried until it is lovely and crispy and golden in color. It is then covered in a sweet and sticky orange sauce, which tastes delicious.

There are many different variations of the sauce, but it typically includes orange zest and orange juice, as well as red chili flakes, ginger, soy sauce, sugar, garlic, and vinegar. If you take a look online, you will see that there are many different recipes for Chinese Ora nge Chicken. Some people prefer to use skinless chicken thighs, for example. The choice is yours. Nevertheless, referring to an authentic Chinese recipe is always going to harvest the best results!

History Of Orange Chicken Day

Orange chicken is a common sight at many North American Chinese restaurants and is a common favorite of patrons. Starting with a foundation of chicken that’s been battered and fried before being tossed in an orange-flavored chili sauce it’s then fried, letting the sauce thicken to a glaze. It was an immensely popular dish in China during the Hunan era and continued to be popular straight into the modern day. There was one period in the past, however, when the orange chicken wasn’t actually made from chicken.

During the 1600’s there was a plague that crossed through northern China and killed off large portions of the chicken population. Out of desperation (and a love of orange chicken), the people there had to find new meats to use in their orange chicken dish. Beef was the most common, but just about any form of meat could be used to make this coveted dish. Of course, the people in southern China had no trouble at all, as their chickens were unaffected.

How to celebrate Orange Chicken Day

The best way to celebrate Orange Chicken Day is to head out into the world, find your favorite Chinese restaurant, and order up a big dish of orange chicken. They tend to serve large portions, however, so why not bring a few friends with you to help demolish the dish?

If you’re feeling truly adventurous you can try to make your own dish of orange chicken. There are a few places you can find a recipe, and if you’re fortunate a relative who’s been making it for years will be your best source. Don’t forget to get a heaping side of rice to go with it, and spring rolls have always gone well with it! Indulge yourself, there’s little in the world as wonderful as this dish!

If you have made Orange Chicken before, or you are feeling confident, the best thing to do is invite some friends and family members around and they can try your delicious take on this famous Chinese meal.

Why not have your own Chinese feast night? You can cook up some other Chinese favorites, or ask everyone who is attending to bring a Chinese-inspired dish with them. Good food and good company, it does not get better than that, right?

You can also spend the day brushing up on your Chinese cooking skills. Of course, Orange Chicken is just one of the many amazing and delicious dishes that China has blessed us with.

There are so many others. Spend the day trying out different meals and Chinese snacks and desserts. We are sure that the people that you live with are going to thank you for it. If you live alone, you can always freeze some of the dishes, or simply give your neighbors a nice surprise!

To help you out with your Chinese feast, we are going to give you some basic Chinese cooking tips! It is important to use the freshest ingredients and it always helps to have everything prepared before you start cooking. Investing in Chinese cooking equipment also makes a lot of sense.

The best piece of Chinese cooking equipment that you can purchase is a wok. While it is not a necessity, it is certainly a lot of fun to cook with it and you will really feel like you are making authentic Chinese dishes. A lot of Chinese cooking is going to involve stir-frying vegetables, and there is an art to this! You need to make sure you stir-fry your vegetables in the right order.

This means that the thickest and toughest vegetables need to go into the pan first. If you throw in everything together, you’re going to end up with some vegetables overcooked and some undercooked. For example, carrots need to be in the pan way before you put any bok choy in.

Cow Appreciation Day History

Cow Appreciation Day

I don't feel like anyone should follow what I did.

Cardi B

History of Cow Appreciation Day

The first Cow Appreciation Day was launched in 2004, in light of Chick-fil-A’s humorous “Eat Mor Chikin” marketing campaign, which began in 1995. The idea behind the campaign is that cows want people to eat more chicken instead of beef. While cows help produce extremely delicious byproducts, like milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream, we eat much more beef overall than those dairy options. Though beef can be extremely rich in vitamins and minerals, and good to eat in moderation, there’s an appreciation we should be giving to the animals themselves that we often overlook.

Humans have been drinking milk from cows for thousands of years. Modern dairy farming began in the early 1900s after pasteurization was developed. Today, up to 65% of people worldwide are unable to digest lactose, with that number around 90% in certain ethnic groups, including Native Americans, African Americans, and those of Hispanic origin. So why are we still drinking milk? To start, it’s delicious, and often a key ingredient in many recipes. However, recently milk alternatives have been gaining popularity and momentum for many adults worldwide. Leading health organizations still recognize the nutrition benefits of milk for young children, and recommend natural dairy milk over plant-based milk for adults only.

Lactose issues aside, cows have given us a lot to be grateful for in the past thousand of years and longer. The ASPCA states that many cows, and other farm animals alike, are treated inhumanely on factory farms. It doesn’t have to be this way. Small-scale family farms and homesteading farms are managed differently than “factory farms”, which have 500 cattle or more. Supporting these small-scale farms, which are likely owned by families instead of corporations, strengthens local economies, and ensures cows get the care and respect they deserve.

Cow Appreciation Day, coined by Chick-fil-A, occurs annually on the second Tuesday of July (July 14). There are more reasons to celebrate cows than just free Chick-fil-A in July, but a free chicken sandwich isn’t a bad perk!

*Please note that Cow Appreciation Day 2020 was postponed by Chick-Fil-A because of the uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fried Chicken Day 2021

Fried Chicken Day

The whole aspect of cinema and film festivals should be a moment to come together and celebrate art and humanity. It would be a shame if there was such a divide.

Keanu Reeves

The bird gets the spotlight on Fried Chicken Day, and stomachs are rumbling already. Move over vegetarians, there’s a deep-fried chicken leg and breast coming this way!

Learn about Fried Chicken Day

Fried chicken, otherwise known as Southern fried chicken, is a dish that features different chicken pieces that have been coated in a seasoned batter. After which, they are either pressure fried, deep-fried, or pan-fried. The breading creates a crisp crust or coating to the exterior of the meat while ensuring the juices are kept inside. Broiler chickens are most commonly used.

There is no denying that fried chicken is one of the best and most popular types of comfort food enjoyed all around the world. It may be greasy, but it is indulgent and very tasty! Today, we are able to enjoy this dish for a very cheap price, and it does not matter where in the world you go, you will be able to enjoy fried chicken on the menu! However, this was not always the case. In fact, fried chicken was deemed an expensive delicacy until the Second World War. However, thanks to mass production techniques, this is no longer the case! Phew!

There are a number of reasons why we all love Fried Chicken Day. Of course, the main reason is that we have the perfect excuse to eat as much fried chicken as we want and we don’t have to feel guilty about it! It is also a dish whereby your manners can go out of the window.

There is no need to use a knife and fork when you are tucking into fried chicken! You can also get many different varieties of fried chicken to select from today. This includes everything from extra crispy to spicy fried chicken. Friend chicken can also be cooked in many different varieties of oil. This includes peanut oil, lard, vegetable shortening, and much more!

There are a lot of different variants of fried chicken that have been released. This includes hot chicken, which is common in the Tennessee area of Nashville. This is a variant that is pan-fried and is coated with a cayenne pepper and lard paste. Popcorn chicken has also become very popular. This can also be referred to as chicken bits. These are small, ball-shaped pieces of boneless chicken. They are battered and fried, resulting in a dish that looks like popcorn, hence the name! Or, what about Barberton chicken? This was created by immigrants from Serbia in Barberton, Ohio. the dish is now very popular throughout the state and it is sometimes called Serbian Fried Chicken.

Another reason why it is important to pay tribute on Fried Chicken Day is that this dish had very humble beginnings. In fact, it acted as a way of empowering slaves. They were able to make their own independent flow of money by selling it. As chickens were the only animals that slaves were allowed to own and raise, this dish became very popular before the Civil War broke out.

History of Fried Chicken Day

In order to really understand the history of this day, we need to understand the history of fried chicken. A lot of people are surprised to learn that this is a type of food that can be dated as far back as Roman Times. This is because there was a recipe for deep-fried chicken in Apicius, which was a Roman cookbook from the 4th century. The dish was called Pullum Frontonianum.

In terms of the expression “fried chicken” itself, this has been traced back to the 1830s. You will see this term used regularly throughout the cookbooks that were released in America during the 1860as and the 1870s. In the southern states of the United States, this dish can be traced back to precedents in West African and Scottish cuisine.

The fried chicken from West Africa involved the chicken being seasoned, battered, and then cooked in palm oil. The Scottish version involved the chicken being cooked in fat, however, it was not seasoned. As mentioned earlier, it was also a way for segregated and enslaved people to make money independently.

Fried Chicken Day has been observed yearly for quite some time now. On this day, fried chicken is prepared and cooked in a number of different ways. Some fried chicken restaurants will have promotions running on this date. This includes the likes of KFC and Church’s Chicken. We have also seen that this date is celebrated across the world now as well.

For example, in Australia, in 2018, KFC gave people the chance to win free fried chicken for an entire year. In order to enter the contest, you were required to make a post on social media that stated the different reasons why you deserved to be the winner of this tasty prize! The person who won the prize was a 19-year-old who got the KFC logo tattooed on her foot. Her friend did the same as well, so let’s hope they shared the fried chicken!

How to celebrate Fried Chicken Day

There are a lot of different ways that you can celebrate Fried Chicken Day. Of course, heading to your favorite fried chicken restaurant is the perfect way to ensure that this day is a success. You can grab some of your friends and loved ones and tuck into your favorite bucket of chicken.

If you are feeling a little bit adventurous and you want to make sure that you enjoy the best of the best, you need to be the chef of the kitchen! Why not have a go at creating your own friend chicken creation? There are lots of great recipes on the Internet today, so you can easily find one to follow!

To add more pizzazz to the day, coat the legendary southern food in spices and yell “Yeehaw!” Cover the chicken with a mixture of cayenne pepper, garlic powder and paprika to put the spring back in the step. A little hot sauce? Sure, let’s go all out! Serve the mouth-watering fried food with chicken gravy to up the yum-factor even more.

Pair the succulent bird with waffles for a classic combo. Or, why not make chicken the star of the show and add a tasty side dish? Lip-smacking sides include buttermilk biscuits, cold potato salad or coleslaw. With fried chicken on the plate, the taste is sure to taste clucking good!

You could become everyone’s favorite person on Fried Chicken Day by treating your co-workers to some fried chicken. All you need to do is order a few family-sized buckets and you will put a big smile on everyone’s face. This is definitely the best way to give your chances of being Employee of the Month a boost!

Independent Retailer Month 2021

Independent Retailer Month

Naturally, my stories are about women - I'm a woman. I don't know what the term is for men who write mostly about men. I'm not always sure what is meant by 'feminist.' In the beginning, I used to say, 'Well, of course I'm a feminist.' But if it means that I follow a kind of feminist theory, or know anything about it, then I'm not.

Alice Munro

Big Box stores like Walmart and Target are certainly convenient, offering so much of the things we need in one place, and the prices they offer can’t be beat. However, there is a section of our local commerce that brings us a local flavor, a taste of home, and makes sure that your purchases really support your local community.

Independent Retailers are our neighbors, friends, and family, whether they’re running the corner store providing gas to keep us on the move, or local craftsman who bring us the best in cheeses and handcrafted furniture, Independent Retailer Month reminds you to help support them to support your community.

History of Independent Retailer Month

Independent Retailer Month was established by Clare Rayner, known throughout the world as “The Retail Champion” to help get local communities working with their local retailers to help keep local money local. There’s been a lot of loss of culture and community throughout the years as big box companies move in and start driving the smaller companies out of business. Without being able to deal in the sheer variety of products and services, and to purchase in the sheer quantities they do and thus getting better prices, the independent retailers are in a significant amount of trouble.

The only way for them to survive is with the support of their community, and the loyalty of these people to their local businesses. Since the creation of Independent Retailer Month, millions of dollar in revenue have been returned to local businesses as people start shopping locally and discovering the hometown feel you get from shopping with your friends and neighbors.

Independent Retailer Month is your opportunity to get in and support your local community, the dream of small business is still alive and well, even with big box stores trying to squash it out of existence.

How to Celebrate Independent Retailer Month

There’s a few ways to celebrate independent retailer month, but the most prominent is getting out there and shopping at local stores and farmers markets. Don’t buy honey from some distant apiary when you can pick it up from your local beekeeper and know that it’s all been born and bred locally.

Milk doesn’t get much fresher than when its purchased from the dairy down the street, and you know that when you buy from a local store, all of that money stays in the community helping to keep the local flavor alive.

To celebrate Independent Retailer Month, we have special activities and deals!

Celebration Mechanical Pencil Day July 5, 2021

Mechanical Pencil Day

Mechanical pencils have so many uses in the workplace. People use pencils every day to calculate payroll, write letters, and complete their work. Students especially use them in schools to do their homework and get good grades.

While much of the world has moved towards digital format, mechanical pencils make writing and design easier than ever before. Mechanical Pencil Day celebrates the history of these pencils and encourages people to celebrate mechanical pencils and their many uses in our daily lives.

History of Mechanical Pencil Day

Pencils were created around the time that graphite deposits were being discovered in Europe during the early 16th century. The first primitive design of the pencil was invented in 1565 by Conrad Gesner, a naturalist, and bibliographer from Switzerland. These pencils were graphite sticks wrapped in string and later were designed with wood so it could be sharpened.

The first mechanical pencil that had tools to move the lead instead of manually sharpening the lead was patented in 1822 by Sampson Mordan and John Isaac Hawkins in Britain. From there, multiple companies began to begin mass producing mechanical pencils.

Mechanical pencils now operate by three types of methods; rachet-based, clutch-based, and screw-based. Today, mechanical pencils have different varieties of lead width and have multiple frames, including plastic, metal, and wood. These pencils are used for writing, but can also be used for art and design.

Due to the slick nature of the mechanical pencil, people now have the ability to create fine details and don’t have to use a pencil sharper. Mechanical Pencil Day celebrates the history of mechanical pencils and how it is today used in workplaces and schools all over the world.

People celebrate the holiday by collecting antique mechanical pencils, reading up on the history of these pencils, and appreciating its uses in daily life.
